My beloved Lakers have made it to the Playoffs! YAAAYYY! And they're top seeded in the Western Conference. WHOO-HOO!! And they won the first match against Denver. AIGGHHT!!!
Here's hoping they take it all the way to the championship!
They've got quite the international line-up. There's Pau Gasol from Barcelona, Sasha Vujacic from Slovenia, Ronny Turiaf from France (Martinique), Vladimir Radmanović, a Serb from Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Didier Ilunga Mbenga, a Belgian from the DR of the Congo. Why, I remember back when Vlade Divac was their token European.
Seriously. I have never heard of dodgeball. Or maybe I have, wasn't there a movie about it, with some guy in the lead, long story about him trying to save his gym, and forming a dodgeball team with a bunch of losers... something like that.. Seriously, I have no idea what dodgeball is.

Yes, there was a movie called DodgeBall with Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller. Dodgeball is a court game we used to play in the gym during PE class on rainy days. Basically, the objective is to eliminate all the members of an opposing team by beaming a rubber ball at them. Players at the receiving end of a ball either dodge the ball or catch it and beam it back. Fun stuff. I take it they don't play this game over in SA?

Yes, that's the movie! I didn't know that was actually a serious sport! Nope, we don't play it in SA.

The Lakers have swept the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs (4-0), and advanced to the next round. Last night they beat Utah Jazz in their first match-up. Yay! The Lakers are back!!
Of course, I still have no idea what sport you're talking about. And don't tell me dodgeball again. The name Lakers sound familiar, though, is it baseball?
Do you recognize this sport, or do you guys only play cricket?
Ah, basketball! Right? Men don't play that here. Actually, nobody does, but women play a game similar to it, called netball.
And no, we don't only play cricket here, actually we play rugby more!
I think I read something about it in the sport pages. Not too a keen fan of basketball myself - I still don't know all the rules. A particular rule which made a deep impression on me when I was young was this prohibition against "travelling". I always remember being admonished for it when I did play during PE. _________________ Hillary Clinton is an acquired taste which I have clearly yet to acquire.

Hm? Basketball players aren't allowed to travel? Doesn't sound like a very democratic sport. What if they want to visit relatives or friends who live elsewhere?

And someone was speaking about the Polish sense of humour! Looks like the Afrikaans one is not worse at all!
I had to smile at Andre's statement. I think basketball was probably not a very well known sport when he was growing up, but I reckon that it is probably rather firmly established as a school backyard sport now. Even in traditional cricket strongholds like the West Indies and Australia, basketball is very popular as a recreational sport.
Ironically, the popularity of basketball has dipped quite a bit over here in recent times. Not many people follow the NBA as our collective male attention is focused on football. It used to be the case that the NBA enjoyed a higher profile, but it owned its popularity very much to Michael Jordan, I suppose.
And of course, girls play netball. _________________ Hillary Clinton is an acquired taste which I have clearly yet to acquire.

Nope! Everybody in South Africa knows basketball is a fictitious sport, played only in American movies and TV shows. It's like Downtown, we know it's fictitious, and only American TV characters ever go there.
Serious, no, basketball is not played at all in SA.
(I'm joking, of course, we know the sport exists, but it's not played here at all, not even as a school backyard sport.) We do play some American sports, purely on a social basis, such as baseball (known here as rounders), and we had an ice hockey team once, but they drowned... _________________ Toe ek jonk was, het ek al die antwoorde geken.
