I wish to hear spoken Afrikaans. I would like to hear the Lord's Prayer and perhaps a film or movie clips in Afrikaans, or any dialogue.

Oh yes, it is still there. I was mistaken. But I wish to hear more, something with more substance, like a documentary or a television show, or radio, or the Lord's Prayer - "Onze Vader", which I like to use to compare. _________________ Operation Northwoods - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods

Wow, that girl was cute, but I could only make out a few words. I didn't understand much of it, probably because they were talking too fast. It sounded just like Dutch, although a wee bit softer than what I'm used to hearing. Did you get that impression as well? _________________ Operation Northwoods - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods

| What a wonderful story! Yes, I also thought it sounded very much like Dutch, from what I remember about it -- it's been awhile since I've heard Dutch, so I can't really tell whether Afrikaans is softer. It seems to have fewer glottal stops. But in regards to either of them being a "harsh" language, I never thought that about either. I don't actually find any language harsh, only the way that certain people speak it. |

It sounds like Dutch, because it is Dutch.
Afrikaans is generally considered to be softer than Dutch.

Ah yes, the short guy in the middle is Casper de Vries, popular Afrikaans comedian. He's hilarious!! And that was of course a spoof on Harry Potter. The other guy I don't know, but if he was on Dis hoe dit is met Steve (major show with Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr), he must be somewhat famous.... But then, Steve has some obscure guests....

Hm, don't understand that. It's not a problem here, maybe it has something to do with the distance... But it shouldn't happen. _________________ Toe ek jonk was, het ek al die antwoorde geken. Nou verstaan ek nie eens die vrae nie. |

I was watching some SABC documentaries about housing issues in South Africa a few weeks ago. They were mainly in English, but the people they interviewed often spoke Afrikaans without being subtitled or dubbed — in other words, the documentaries had been made under the assumption that the viewer at least understood both English and Afrikaans. I could sort of follow most of it, but I thought that the whole idea of it was rather interesting.
