Please forgive me for writing in English (French seems even less appropriate ;)), but could someone (André) please tell me if my assumptions about word-endings for Latin cognates in Afrikaans are correct?

Afrikaans - English

-eer = verb
-sie = -tion
-teit = -ty
-isme = -ism
-eel = -al
-aal = -al

Thanks! :)

Mostly, yes, though there are a few words which do not absolutely follow that pattern.

The most common word-ending for Afrikaans verbs is -eer, not -en as in Dutch?

Kan je eens een paar voorbeelden geven?

Yes, we generally use -eer where the Dutch use -en

OK, for verbs that usually end in -eren in Dutch.

What about Germanic ordinary verbs like geven, spreken, eten? Out of curiosity, how do you say gaan, zijn, hebben?

spreken - spreek

So... why does one tend to say « ek praat Afrikaans » ? Is there a distinction between 'spreek' and 'praat'?

Spreek as in "Ek spreek Afrikaans" has completely disappeared from Afrikaans, it's always "Ek praat Afrikaans". Spreek in Afrikaans today only means "to talk to someone, meet with someone, in a formal manner". Eg. "ek gaan die dokter spreek" (I'm going to see the doctor", "Ek wil jou spreek" (I want to see you in a formal meeting to discuss something important).

Also: "Ek spreek die gehoor toe" (I'm addressing the audience") But note that in this case the verb is "toespreek", not "spreek".

"spreek" also forms part of the words "bespreek" (to discuss" and "afspreek" (to agree to do something, to make and appointment). Afspraak = appointment.

And then we have the saying: Hy sprak geen sprook. (He didn't say anything, he kept quiet)
