Since this is the place to post pictures from traveling, here's a page full of photos I took on a recent trip to Hungary where half my family is from.

Oh, joy!!! A Hungary thread!

Do you speak Hungarian then? As Pauline said, it would be quite useful because we could include Hungarian in the broken translation game. I don't mind translating twice...

Which part of Hungary is your family from? (Kíváncsi vagyok.)

Jó éjt!

I guess I speak Hungarian as good as my late grandmother spoke English (not very good, but good enough to talk about common things and be understood). I used to study it a lot but gradually stopped because I didn't have much opportunity to use it. Then came a year and a half of intense Arabic studies and I actually forgot really basic words like "és." (that means "and") So while I was on the plane I brought one of my old books and spent several hours on the plane going through it again, analyzing every sentence, memorizing all the words I forgot and more, trying to ingrain all the grammar and vocabulary in my head. So when I got there I still didn't use it much (mostly just because I never had and there was still a fear barrier) but I did speak it every now and then and one relative of mine said I was good. Right now, I'm back to hitting the Arabic books again to study for a very important test but I don't want to lose any Hungarian so...discussion boards and a Broken Translations game might help a lot!

Most of my relatives are from all over western Hungary. Nyíregyháza, Tiszaújváros, Szeged, and of course Budapest. My grandfather's family came from Kunmadaras but all the people from that branch of the family has since moved to Szeged and Budapest.
