Ik heb een vraag. Okay, I'm switching to English. In Dutch, there is masculine/feminine "de", and neuter "het". Is "het" only applied to inanimate things then? People and animals are "de", but objects and places are "het"?

No. Many inanimate objects are de-words, and some animate objects are het-words, especially in the diminutive form.
de auto — the car
de vork — the fork
de student — the stuent
de danser — the dancer
de identiteit — the identity
de kwestie — the question
de hand — the hand
de dag — the day
de tafel — the tabel
de man — the man
de vrouw — the woman
het huis — the house
het meisje — the girl
het mannertje — the little man
het socialisme — the socialism
het woord — the word
het glas — the glass
het kind — the child
