I've never actually been skiing, although I know a lot of people who often go. People here usually go skiing in France or Switzerland, although there are some ski resorts in Scotland as well (but they don't seem to get much attention).
Although I don't go skiing myself I know there are lots of places in Poland that offer facilities to do so. People sometimes prefer to go to Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland or France.
I like watching ski jumping. Yestarday a new season started in Kuusamo, Finland. Unfortunately, bad weather conditions completely distorted the final result: those who were supposed to win found themselves on the bottom of the table. Today's competition was cancelled again for the reason of strong wind and snow.
For 5 years I have been supporting our champion - Adam Małysz.
It seems like a rather posh upper-class sport to me. It ranks alongside polo and fencing as far as I am concerned - inaccessible and elitist.
But I'd love to try it. I've visited a ski station in New Zealand before, but never got round to actually ski down the slope. I ended up whiling away my afternoon at an apres-ski lodge sipping hot Milo. Ahh...that's life. _________________ Hillary Clinton is an acquired taste which I have clearly yet to acquire.
I love ski. I used to go in the Alps (near Grenoble), Pyrenees and Massif Central. For some reason I always forget to plan ski holidays and opt for warmer destinations instead.

I once spent a weekend in St. Moritz, about 25 years ago, but it was in the summer. I've never skiied (I don't even know how to spell it!) -- I've never gone skiing, that's better! When I was growing up in the ballet world, skiing was verboten, as was any other sport which might result in a serious injury.

When I was in my late 20s, living (and still dancing) in New York, I went with a friend to a ski resort and sat around in the ski lodge, sipping hot chocolate, watching the beginners falling in the snow, and seeing the more advanced skiers whizzing down the slopes. Ahh...that's life. Skiing looked fun enough that I vowed I'd try it at some point when I stopped dancing, but in fact I never did. Now that I obsessively avoid cold weather, I guess it'll never happen.

Do you like ski, is it popular and widely practiced in your respective countries ?
I used to ski a lot up in Mammoth or Big Bear (both in California). A couple of times I've skiied in Whistler in British Columbia. Haven't done it in years though. Winter sports are probably not as popular in California as summer sports but when I was growing up it was popular among my school friends.
OK, now I am convinced that you are a man.....
(BTW I hate watching winter sports on TV. It's just sooo boring! But hey, skiing is an alien sport imposed on my West Coast home by the imperialistisc Norwegian government in the 19th century! )
Apperently Continental Europeans think skiing is also a pre-Christmas activity. In Scandinavia it's just too cold for that untill the sun comes back in March-April. Easter is the big ski holiday here in Norway. But when the skiing season comes, I'll be out skiing (cross-country, the way skiing was intended to be). _________________ Wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weiß nichts von seiner eigenen. = Those who don't know foreign languages, know nothing of their own. Hmmm....even I feel maternal urges when I watch ski jumping. Those jumpers are just so petite and anorectic! _________________ Wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weiß nichts von seiner eigenen. = Those who don't know foreign languages, know nothing of their own. (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)
I'd love to jump skis But I've never skied. I did some Snowboarding in Austria however, which is great! _________________ My site:http://www.AntonKemmeren.com
I only tried snowboarding once and thought it was far more difficult than skiing. But I guess it has all to do with what you learn first. _________________ Wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weiß nichts von seiner eigenen. = Those who don't know foreign languages, know nothing of their own. Hmm, but I don't like skiing that requires a ski lift. When I ski I want to immerse myself in nature, not be part of a semi-industrial complex. _________________ Wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weiß nichts von seiner eigenen. = Those who don't know foreign languages, know nothing of their own. Skiing is widely practised here in Sweden.
My favourite ski resort here is Sälen.
Nice scene! The climate changing will chance that nice view too. It has already changed it resulting winters without snow even here in North Europe. Last winter in Finland was catastropfic, I couldn't ski at all.
