What is it about the Dordogne ("Dordogneshire") that the Brits find appealing? Has anyone here been there? I'm sure it's lovely but I think I'd rather retire in the Loire Valley or somewhere along the Mediterranean.

Dordogne, or Périgord, is truly the garden of Eden. It's beautiful, the climate is mild (a bit cold and rainy in winter), the gastronomy is excellent and the architecture inspiring. It's a stressless rural area where nature has always been man's best ally. Many English people come down there because of a kind of atavism tracing back to the Middle Age and the Anglo-French rivalry for the Duchy of Aquitaine (Guyenne), the land of Aliénor, wife of a French, then English, king and mother of Richard Cœur-de-Lion & Jean Sans-Terre. France's main Anglophone paper is published in Dordogne, which is not far away from Bordeaux — a traditional land of election for English people with an interest for France.

If you choose to settle in Périgord, you'll be halfway (physically and culturally) from Ligérie and the Mediteranean.

Another good thing about Dordogne : Ségolène Royal got 53,4 % there.
