How close are the two to eachother? Are they as close as English and Scots are to eachother, or about as close as Spanish is to Portuguese? Or less than both?

Can't really compare it to those languages, I don't know.
The two languages largely share the same vocabulary (although the spelling differs a lot), but the grammar is vastly different. I can understand Dutch when spoken slowly, and read it.
