"seker"?.....Ik begrijp dit woord niet.
When translating from Afrikaans to Dutch, you change "ek" to "Ik" and "s" to "z" in most cases, and "y" to "ij" in most cases, correct? Forgive me for switching to English. Ik ken zeer Nederlands weinig . _________________ Operation Northwoods - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods

no problem.. yeah, thats pretty much it on the word translation, so far as i can tell. also, something else that threw me for a loop with dutch for a bit is 'het'. 'het' does not mean 'the' in afrikaans, it actually means 'had' or 'have', or sometimes even 'did', depending on the context.
seker = certain, surely, sure, probably
in that case i was going for 'surely' or 'probably' :P |

Lool, not 100% sure with dutch myself, but I know with Afrikaans, 'Jy' is 'You' as in "He, She, You", 'Jou' is you as in 'Him, Her, You', and 'u' the formal version of both 'jy' and jou'. So unless I'm your mom, your teacher, or are trying to be proper in a customer service setting, you wouldn't use 'u' much. Not sure which one of those Dutch equivilents correspond to the Afrikaans 'jy' and 'jou'. |

Heeft u = formal

Zwartboek is such a great movie! I've seen it twice. ;) The DVD version is available for english speaking people as well, with english subtitles:

Je Nederlands is best goed voor iemand die er pas recentelijk mee gestart is!
Your Dutch is quite good for someone who only started learning it recently!
Ik zal proberen om de zinnen zoveel mogelijk op de Engelse variant te laten lijken, zodat je het makkelijker kunt leren. Op deze manier kun je ook meteen de overeenkomst tussen Engels en Nederlands beter zien.
I shall try to make the sentences resemble the English variant, so that you can read it more easy. This way you can also see the resemblance between English and Dutch better. _________________ My site: http://www.

_________________ Operation Northwoods - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods

You pick up the basics of a language quickly then. :) I didn't quite understand your last sentence because it seemed a bit out of place (maybe you meant you don't have time to take a course?)
Je leert de basis van een taal snel dan. :) Ik begreep je laatste zin niet helemaal omdat het een beetje op de verkeerde plek leek. (misschien bedoelde je dat je geen tijd hebt om een cursus te doen?)

The best thing to do is listen to spoken Dutch a lot. :)
Here are some Dutch spoken clips (In standard Dutch) from Dutch movies about WWII. The best thing to do is pause after every sentence and maybe listen again until you understand what they say:

Yeah, I think I do, so long as I apply myself. What I was attempting to express is that I don't have the time to devote to studying Dutch, and the internet is my only source, so I won't be able to take a course. So what I was trying to say is that I don't have time for personal study on the internet, which is what I've been using. As you can see, my grammar is atrocious. I learned a lot of words, and I know how to pronounce most of them, and I listen to Dutch radio online, and I've exposed myself to a lot of written Dutch. That's the only way I've learned it. I've learned basically by being exposed to it, rather than actually learning grammatical rules, so I'm often hit-or-miss when it comes to word order and grammar in general. I learned a remarkable amount of Dutch in just about 1.5 weeks. I myself am quite impressed with my results, even though my grammar is terrible. I learned all the numbers, pronouns, and colors in just a single day, and I memorized them all. Then I set about learning the prepositions, articles, and most common verbs, etc. And now I can speak it on a basic level I would say.
And thanks for the clips!
