Broken translation game!!!This game is about the translation of a text. This text will start in english (because all the visitors can read it) and it will finish in english for a good comparaison. Only the person making the translation and I will see the text. After each translation the text will go to the next person until the final one. after the completion I will post the entire proces: all the texts, then we can enjoy the changes and discover if/where it has altered
each person who would like to play this game please write:
1. from which languages you would like to translate
2. in which ones
It's not necssary to perfectly know the languages As on unilang, it's not allowed to use a translator for example babelfish, but you can look up in the dictionary.
So, please reply if you'd like to play and your languages offered. Then i will try to make the plan of who will translate 1st, 2nd, etc...for include as many languages as possible!!
Example:
1 st person english > german
2nd person german > afrikaans
3rd person afrikaans > dutch
etc..
I hope that many people will play this game!!
PS yelina,
te necesitamso porque eres la única que puede traduccir el castellano al francés!!! Entonces, pon tu nombre aquí por favor!!!!!!! Gracias. tu y Loic podéis añadir el chino también si queréis. Qué divertido tener un idioma tal exótico en el juego
PS Liz,
we can't include hungarian Only if there will be another person who can speak it.
PS everyone,
Absolutly *no* language is too little, rare or ridiculous , for example on unilang the language Klingon is in the game LOL!!! This is the language of people from another planet or something like this on a TV programme /film

Don't worry, I'm not fluent in all those languages. I have a pretty good knowledge of Spanish, and I'm in the process of learning the other major Romance languages. I've also started to study German, but I don't think I'd be able to do a good German-English or English-German translation yet.

Hi everyone
It would be great to include Welsh and Hungarian, but until now there are only one person for each, so we need another!!! Scots would be fun as well, and we need only a person who can tranlsate into it still, maybe there's someone? Daniel?

hi deborah
There must be some mistakes and not accurate tranlsations, or the game would be very boring. It's absolutly *not* a test!!! I hope that there will be many inaccuracies
hi everyone
Unfortunatly there are few people We need more people so we would get several versions of the original text
I don't know the best thing - maybe to send the text in a PM to the other people to ask them to translate into a language we know that they know e.g. Daniel --> Scots, André --> afrikaans etc...Those people didn't wriet their names on this list, so I don't know if this is acceptable to do. we have put them into the list.
It seems Fredrik is disappeared from the forum, so we must take his name from the list.
hi Benjamin & Harrenys
you speak *very* useful combinations of languages, so you will translate two times. Please make sure that you forget the text & translate the 2nd time what you read on the text you wil receive the 2nd time without to look /remember the 1st text LOL!!
The only possibiity to include Llatai, is when teh game will end in Welsh. It would be great to find someone who can translate welsh, scots & english as then it can go: (Llatai --> )Welsh --> Scots --> English.
New list
Lazar English --> Portuguese
Harrenys Portuguese --> Dutch
Liz Dutch --> German
Benjamin German --> Spanish
Kornelia Spanish --> Polish
KsA Polish --> English
Greg English --> French

PAAAAAUUUUULIIIIINEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my Goodness!!!!!! I'm in the soup up to the neck, like Brennus.
I can't translate form Dutch...or I might try but my German is lousy! I would prefer the previous role!!!!!!!!!!!
I might try translating from Dutch...but into German???? Poor someone being followed by me! My Dutch is strictly receptive...my productive skills are less than nought, converging into minus infinite. Imagine me translating with such an "impressive" knowledge into my lousy German (making only one mistake in each sentence is a great achievement on my part)!!!!
I'm bitterly dissapointed.
PS: I'm just being tongue-in-cheek, but I'm really and truly frightened!
|
Liz
|
Oh...I see...My translation will go the Benjamin. Poor guy...
PS: Not that my English isn't lousy, but there is a scale of lousiness, and my English is without a doubt closer to the "acceptable" end than my German or, let alone, my Dutch. Besides, if we can't include Hungarian as I'm the only person around who speaks the language, it is English, in which I have fluency closest to my native language, so pairing Dutch with German in my case is doomed to complete fiasco. But why not?
Anyway, my Hungarian isn't the best conceiveable, either. Funnily enough, I always get very good marks for my Hungarian to English translations and somewhat worse marks for my English to Hungarian translations. I haven't got the foggiest why this is so. I have always been positive that I *do* speak and write Hungarian well, but now I'm preparing to throw the last vestiges of my self-esteem into the rubbish bin.

This Broken Translation Game is started: I've sent the English text in a PM to Lazar. He will trasnlate it into Portuguese & send it in a PM to me and to Harrenys.
Lazar !!! You've a PM
After Lazar will finish, I will put his name in another colour on the list, so everyone will see to where the translation is progrssed.

Pauline, is it a problem if I can't translate from Saturday to Wensday? I'm having five exams!!!
Anyway, I hope the pecking order won't reach me in those few days. Ouch!!!!

Hi Liz,
It's no problem at all. Lazar has translatde and sent it to Harrenys!! So, he was incredible quickly, but there will be some people who havn't time, don't visit etc so there will be for example some days between. There's no stress, time limit etc.. Maybe it will finish at Christmas
Anyway, probably next week i will go to school, so during the days it won't be possible to check as much as I've this week, but i will check every day. If I wouldn't be able to during this game then my brother will make the updates (he helpd me make the list etc.. and find it very fun) but probably I will arrange all the things.
Harrenys you have a PM from Lazar!!!

Lucky you, Deborah...I have to translate from my worst language into my second worst language!!!! Aaaarghhh!!!!! I preferred the previous "I have to translate from German into English" version (if Hungarian isn't included
). At least I can guarantee some inaccuracies -- it's gonna be exciting!
I sort of envy those who have to translate into English regardless of the fact that it isn't my native language.

Well, I have to translate from a language that I only really have oral knowledge of (German) into a language that I can read fairly well but find difficult to produce myself (Spanish).
And then I have to translate from a language which I don't really know at all (Afrikaans — I listed that as a worst scenario to try to give as many options as possible) into my best non-native language (French).
Oh dear...
|
Liz
|
Poor you (Benjamin) -- two translations!!!
Then my Dutch is halfway between your Afrikaans and your Spanish, I presume.
|
Benjamin [inactive]
|
I think I'll have to read what's written in German and Afrikaans out loud — that usually makes it easier for me to understand them. I'll probably have to translate them both into English first anyway, because I'm not sure if I can 'transcribe' German and Afrikaans directly into Spanish and French.

Since you are living in Germany, I assume that means you can get along in German. That would automatically make you better in your "second worst" language than I am in my "best" language (which should really be "second best", since English is my best).

Today is the 14th June, so for sure this game won't finish after 2 weeks, but on 30th June i will go away during 21 days.
so, would you like (another person) to take over the organisation of this game ? It would be:
1. receive the PM translated text & save it (every one because after we will post all the transations)
2. send the text to the next person & expalin them into which language to translate and after to send it to you & the person after.
3. update the list in the various colours
Please tell me if you want to do this.
Thanks
Love,
Pauline
(PS Until 29th june I will make this organisation)

Omg.
Hope the text isn't too long, and is simple enough.
I'm not fluent in Scots although I've been exposed to it long enough having lived in Scotland almost all my life... I just hope that I won't f*ck it up with the vocabulary (since there is no standard spelling system - but I think I'll adopt the Doric variant)... *bites lips*
Sh*t, I don't have my Scots dictionary...
Think I should run up to Inverness to fetch it?

My Cymraeg is very limited. I know a few phrases and I have a little bit of grammar ... but expect a totally different text.
And I'm guilty of not reading my inbox everyday. I read the PM yesterday and at the moment I have the first sentence nearly completed. Will take a while since work occupies me a lot at the moment.

Translate what the person has written It's funnier!!!!!!!!!!
I played this game on unialng (it's how I disocvered it) and I translated from Spansih into Dutch. there were 2 words what I noticed as mistakes in the Spanish text, and I wasn't certain if I must write the one it was supposed to be or what I saw. I chose to write the one I saw, and the girl after me who translated it from Dutch into French wrote that she noticed 2 strange words LOL!!!!
After, the text there has changed very much, and people describe it not appropriate for children to read it, and other funny comments. The game isn't finished there, but I anticipate that the text will be unrecognisable !!! I hope that our text here will be as well.

Oh, well, if I'd realized that "unrecognizable" was the goal, I'd have volunteered to translate from English into anything!
|
Liz
|
I remember having found one word that didn't really fit in the Dutch text. It might have really been in the original text, but I found it strange. Of course, I translated that way because that's the goal of the game.
I'm not sure anyway because I'm not proficient enough in Dutch to be able to recognise the tiny little nuances.
PS: Pauline, I think I've told you about the "from a poem to a Pick salami advertisement" sort of translation parody by Frigyes Karinthy. I'm sorry I can't share it with you. I can't even show it to Bashar because, as far as I'm aware, he can't speak German.

Great!!!
Your suggestions in red would be very well but we must ask Julian if he'd like to play this game. If he doesn't like you can translate French into Basque, and Chris_notts can translate Basque--> English. It's the best if we will finish in English.

Yes ok, I posted a private message to Julian, Pauline, you can start your translation project, because us, we're at the end... Il ne faut pas que les autres s'impatientent!

Yes, the game was started about 2 weeks ago If you look to the list, those names in blue are the people who've translated the text. the ones in black will translate it, and Tiorthan has it now.
As you've noticed, there're much people before you, so we can wait for the reply of Julian and the other person.

The list of names (the update). The names until Tiorthan are in blue, doesn't this look this way on your compuetr? i use Firefox, and the blue colour for this forum -maybe it's because of this?
Don't worry, I will tell you when you must translate, but I think that it will be at least 2 weeks as there're many before you. If it's during I'm away, Walker will tell you as he will make those updates.
The text is send from the person who translate it --> PM to the next person. all the other people don't see the text until they must translate it. The text will be written in posts after the game will finish: all the translations as well, so we can compare them.

Until now I only translated the first sentence and looked over the text for words I immediately recognize. I will however spend my evening on the text today.
I will not finish today, that's for sure. And if I'm not finished by wednesday I'll invent a completly new text

Okay LOL!!!!!! Please ensure that you finish it before friday!!!! I want to read it but the end of next week I will go away!!!!

I'm done. Quite a challenge to translate from a language you don't really know that's halfway remotely related to another language that you just start to understand.
I believe the topic of the text is roughly the same as before but there will be a hell of a lot of mistakes where I just had to guess the grammar and sometimes the vocabulary.
I'm the first to vote for a new spelling system that indicates initial mutations

Sorry Tiorthan, I feel your pain. Hats off to you for putting through the effort. Glad you volunteered to translate from Welsh. At least you must have a little more understanding of it by playing this game. Let me know if you want to learn more, there are online resources and email lists for Welsh learners if you really want to get into it. Some lists have fluent or native speakers who'll help with your questions. They've been a great resource for me. I know, too late for this game at least, but for future reference.

Diolch Llatai.
I'd like to dive a little deeper into the language though it will be low priority at the moment.
Whilst translating I realized how closely related Gaeilge and Cymraeg really are structurally and how different at the same time. It's a beautiful language even if it has far to much y's and w's but I like the sound of it and the "feeling" of the grammar.

Pauline sent me (and Tiorthan, I think) the translations that have been made so far. So now it's greg who's holding the ball.

Tiorthan

Yes she did do so.
I send my translation to Greg so he should have recived a message from me and from Pauline.
