Eurovision Song Contest

I recall the last time we talked about the ESC. I can't believe it was a year ago. I haven't watched any of the previous parts leading up to the final, and I haven't heard much of the Swedish song by The Ark. So it'll be real exciting...

Right now it's the Irish contribution.

For sure an east european country will win, because for example Yugoslavia vote for themself: macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Coratia, Slovenia etc... all get a national vote west eurpean countries havn't the chance against such voting.

Walker, sweden, Norway, Iceland and denamrk vote for each other always as well
Julian

What are the rules to this song contest? Some of the acts are singing in their native languages but others are singing in English. And the music styles are so varied. How does one choose the winner?

We'll see, we'll see... So what do you think of Ukraine's song?

Nowadays you can choose if you want to sing in your native language or in English. Basically, all the participating countries have a number of votes/numbers to give:

"Countries award a set of points from 1 to 8, then 10 and finally 12 to other songs in the competition — with the favourite song being awarded 12 points".

"After the interval act is over, when all the points have been calculated, the presenter(s) of the show call upon each voting country in turn to invite them to announce the results of their vote".

Televoting is also used. You can't vote for the country you are in. I hope Pauline won't vote for Ukraine.

The vocals must be sung live, of course.

You phone the number in your country to vote, then each country will make a total of the votes they've received. Each country will give 12 votes to the winner, 10 the next one, 8, etc...It's not allowed to vote for your own country, but everyone know that in east europe they can because their countries have divided up.

I think that the style of music and in which language to sing is the choice of each country.

So far Germany was the best and many were the worst France was terrible!!! I didn't listen the first ones so maybe there was a good song - Spain can be okay probably. i don't like east european music or their clothes. Especially Romania was a horrible and stupid song.

You think I've this taste????????? " alt="" border="0" /> Ukraine was absolutly stupid and boring
Pauline

The emoticon has such shock after your question (comment) that he's disappeared!!!!

Britain was like the silly songs from 20 years ago, France was ridiculous, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg didn't get a place so my only neighbour to vote is Germany, and anyway germany's song was good!!! I like big band All the east europeans vote for their neighbour so I make this as well.

Of course not! I was just teasing, okay!

I like big band too! But Frank Sinatra jazz sung in German doesn't quite work in my opinion. But you're right: countries do vote for their neighbors a lot. Both Denmark and Norway gave their 12's to Sweden. I can't believe Ukraine came so close to winning, it wasn't even funny. In case you all are wondering about it, let's just say it was one of those songs you don't want Americans to hear (or see). And what did I say about Ireland's song? It came last having received only 5 points. That lass was so off-key that I felt uncomfortable despite the wine.

I didn't vote but if I had I might've voted for Finland.

Anyway, Serbia won.

23 UnitedKingdom 19
24 Ireland 5

This countries didn't win a place in the final:

Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Andorra, Malta, Cyprus.
This were the countries who've founded, created the Contest but now it's not allowed that they take part

It's not fun when it's evidently only an eastern country who will win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc.... It's fortunate that it's not so important, just a song competition.

I voted for France (as I usually do, coincidentally).

We had some neighbours come round to our house and we watched it together. I think most of us decided at the end that we should have a 'Western Eurovision Song Contest', because it's now so difficult for Western European countries to get points.

I was just thinking — if Scotland were an independent country, they would enter the Eurovision Song Contest separately. Would Scotland vote for England, like how the Nordic countries vote for each-other, how Cyprus and Greece vote for each-other, how the former Yugoslav countries vote for each-other and how the former Soviet Union countries vote for each-other? I actually entirely doubt it.

Why aren't they allowed to take part? That doesn't seem fair to me.

But who decides what act and which song will represent a country? Does each country have its own contest where voters select who goes on to Eurovision? If so, then what drugs were the Britons on when they selected this shit on a shingle:

Please tell me it was all a collective joke.

Yikes! I couldn't watch even half of it.

That's really nice Benjamin! Even maybe too nice because they didn't deserve it!

To tell the truth I don't understand why there is so much noise about Eurovision, it's not song contest, it's just the way to show one's preferences, mostly in politics, so funny so see how neighbour countries vote for each other, I voted for Ireland, but they became the last, all other songs where as if i heard them for many times before, nothing really new and Serbian victory....I even didn't understand who was signing man or woman...but actually it's not the matter, but the melody was just ordinary, all I can say is that Eurovision level is lower each year.

Also UK,Germany, France ans Spain always take part in contest even if they are at the end of a table, coz they are sponsors....OK, but then think about the real values of Eurovision, it must be closed!

Exactly: a Western ESC; this is what many people here have thought last year as well.

Or, our countries can divide up like yugoslavia and russia in several mini-countries. But, maybe this wouldn't help, because like you wrote scotland wouldn't vote for england and wallonie wouldn't vote for flanders LOL!! But, at least there would be a more balance between east / west, so in the west we can give also many votes to western countries. Everyone here found that denmark and Switzerland had the best songs but they didn't ahve the chance for go to the final.

Julian wrote:

It's absolutly not fair at all!!! They can take part but statistical it's completely impossible that the most of this list of countries can win a place in the final. All 10 eastern eurpean candidates at the semi-finla winned a place but nobody of those western ones. some didn't deserve a place, including Belgium this year (although last year the belgian song was very good and also didn't go to the final because of the vote system).

To explain an example so that you can imagine it:

each country can vote for all other ones excepted for itself. So, britain can vote to give 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10 & 12 points each to various countries. The same for each western country. BUT the eastern ones have divided up since their wars / end of communism etc..so that now Yugoslavia can vote many times and give all those points by:
Macedonia
Serbia
Croatia
Montenegro
BosniaHerzegovina
Slovenia

Last year, Serbia and one of those other ones was one country, but now they've split up. Proabbly next year bosnia and Herzegovina will get divided as well so they will each vote!!! Then one country will vote 7 times!! Of course they voet for themself and then for other eastern friends like romania, moldova. The same with Russia, who can voet several times because it's divided in Russia, Belorus, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine etc...The eastern countries vote for eastern ones, but western countries vote for eastern ones as well because there're *very* many eastern immigrants in the western countries who vote. This was always to see in Germany who voted every year 12 points to Turkey. Now, the Portuguese people have told that their voting was very influenced by immigrants because the most of them in their country are from romania, moldova and another place for which Portugal gave the top points.

It's all politic and anti-western feelings, and this absolutly has spoiled the fun of the contest for western europe (who created the competition!!!!).Luxembourg gave up and didn't take part. The other problem is that the eastern songs mostly are so rubbish, stupid, old-fashoined, and hit loudly some drums. The winner, Serbia, was okay and she can sing so I'm not against the winner, but ukraine nealry has been the winner and it was completely a shit song (noise).

Before the eastern countries have joined in it was fun.

Yes, the big western countries have their place in the final only because they sponsor the contest. If they weren't the sponsor, then it wouold be for them like for all the little western countries: have a great singer, fantastic song but don't get a place at the final because an ugly and stupid "song" (noise) from eastern europe get many votes from its friends who was one country 5 years ago, speak the same language and hate the west. Also, because many of them emigrated to the west from where they phone to vote.

The serbian was a woman, but looks like a man I think as well. It was very weird her song, but not so bad as the most of them.

Pauline wrote:

Yes, I didn't like her song as well!
My personal 'favorites' (if I may call it that way) were the songs from Finland, Hungary, Germany and Russia. But still, none of the songs was great *in my opinion*. The last year's competition proved that regarding music, I seem to have a different taste than other Europeans.

The 'song' of the Ukraine was just unbelievable. I have the feeling that those who are able to put on a ridiculous show automatically belong to one of the favorites that's why I think that Germany should bring Stefan Raab back to the Eurovision Song Contest, since he is gifted in making fun of such competitions!
Is there anyone remembering his song Wadde hadde dudde da?
Omg, lol

LOOOL, Russia is devided into Russia, Belorus blablabla, I ve never heard anything more funny then that, sorry, but as I'm Russian, it made me laugh, especially that a country can vote several times, yeah. Russians who were abroad of course voted for Russia, like any other nation. And it was USSR who consited of different countries, learn history.

Quote:

Don't forget that it is EUROvision song contest and not WESTERNvison. Moreover Eastern countries joined EU and some of them including ex-Yugoslavia really want to do it, IMHO now it is only FUN and not a contest, because noone takes seriously this competition and really talanted and popular musicians will never take part in Eurovision.
For example, Russian girls-band is totally unkown in Russia, they were created just for Eurovision coz nobody wanted to go there, it was their first concert and 3d place even if only our neighbours voted for us, is a good result for girls made their 1st performance.

right, because only such music can win in Eurovision. But IMHO Germany was really old-fashioned this year LOL.

it's not shit, it's just for fun, IMHO Ukraine must have won and then everybody would have seen the real face of Eurovision haha

Okay, yes I better would have written the USSR. This is what I meaned, not Russia.

Unfortunatly

It *was* fun before eatsern countries ruined it, so now of course not the talented people don't want to take part in such a fake contest when everyone know it that a slavic country or Romania will win.

deliberalty old-fashioned is another thing that shit and bad taste like thos eastern ones

It's typical what eastern europeans think: some stupid thing like Ukraine can win , and for east europe such an imbecile performance is funny. It wasn't funny at all, but completely rubbish.
