GUESS THAT CITYA NEW GAME : Can you guess what is that city :

What city?

I think it's somewhere in Spain... Madrid, perhaps?

Sorry, the pictures didn't show up on my pc before. I am going to guess it's somewhere in the Iberian Peninsula, but I wouldn't know what city. Maybe somewhere in Central or northern Spain?

Yes I can
The square buildings with "cut" corners on the 1st and 3rd pictures are very characteristic...
|

hehehe !... Your location had helped you too much. I'll post a more difficult later !
PS. It was Barcelona, the biggest mediterranean city of western Europe, and actually one of my favourite cities of Europe...
Patrikke, do you live there ?

Okay, my turn. Where is this?

I think it may be in the country of André, I would vote for Johannesburg.

At the moment I spend half my time in Belgium, half my time in Spain (for those who used to know me as a Bolognese: I left Italy one month ago)
I should settle in Barcelona within a few weeks (I actually lived there for a few months back in 2000 and am originally from French Catalonia, even though I was born in your "arrondissement")
By the way, nice choice of pictures, very typical but not the usual monuments or clichés

Do you guys really think of Barcelona as a Spanish city? I find it difficult to think of it as a "Spanish" city, being that a lot of the people don't even speak Castillian. I think of it more as a Catalan city within Spain, sort of the way I think of Quebec as being a French state within Canada, but not really Canada, in that it is not Anglophone.

Yes, I see Barcelona as a 'Spanish' city because it is in Spain. Anyway, I spoke Castillian when I was there and didn't have any difficulty.
And yes, I see Québec as Canadian. I see no reason whatsoever why 'Canada' should imply 'English language'.

Johannesburg it is! The first two pictures were taken in the suburb of Hillbrow, and the last one is in Johannesburg city centre (perhaps Braamfontein or Nieu-Doornfontein).

Yes, if I had shoosen the Sagrada familia it would have been too easy!!

Of course that Barcelona is in Spain !
You canno't say that the people don't speack castillan, actually 100% of the Barcelona people are Castillian speaker, and maybe only 60% of these are Catalan speaker. Actually the city is complety bilingual.
Not to forget that it host a lot of immigrants from latin-America who, of course speak Castillian.
It is a quite different situation than with Quebec (even if Quebec is also clearly Canadian). And Spain is a country that is unified by the use of the Castillian language and the presence of regional co-official languages in the "spanish nations" (galicia, Pais Vasco, Catalunia, etc)

Well done for guessing correctly, Fab! Actually, I'm amazed that you not only realised straight away that it was in South Africa, but also that it was Johannesburg... especially considering that those three pictures could quite easily have been taken in Birmingham (UK), LOL. Have you been there?
|
Porthos
|
You know what, I would have guessed somewhere in England, but now, after taking a closer look at the picture, I realized that everyone was black! So, South Africa was a reasonable guess, but I wouldn't know which city exactly, other than to guess the major ones, which is probably what Fab did.
|
fab

Benjamin,
as we say in French "j'ai l'oeuil", I like to observe thinkg, especially when it concern urban things (professional deformation).
Actually I would say That at first it could looked like it was in a lot of different anglophone countries. But seeing the cars, I thought it wasn't in the USA, and all people we see are black. I know that downtown Johanesbourg is nowadays mainly black.
Actually I've been to south Africa with my parents when younger, but not in Jo-Burg and quite long time ago.

Okay then, what about this one?

another Guess (easy one) :

Benjamin,
At first sight I would think of the United Kingdom, although I didn't noticed any sign that could give me a clue.
I think it could be also maybe in Germany, or maybe Denmark or Scandinavia, or in any former Birtish colony.
And this one ?

Fab — are your pictures of Verona in Italy?

It's more southern than Verona.

Hmm... The Maison Carrée, the Arènes, the Cathédrale de Notre-Dame et St-Castors, tauromachie... My guess would be Nîmes.

Benjamin:
My guess is Wellington, New Zealand. (The church is typically "colonial Anglican, similar to the Anglican church in Copenhagen, and I think the modern building in the next picture is the parliament), right?

GOOD ANSWER !! Do you know Nîmes, have you been there ? Is it famous in the USA ?

Alas, I only know Nîmes through pictures. Is Nîmes famous in the USA? I would venture to guess that not a whole lot of Americans have ever heard of it, but maybe I'm wrong. I first heard of it in elementary school when a teacher told me that that's where the word "denim" comes from.

Well, I wouldn't exactly say that since I've never been to France, but I wouldn't pass up an invitation.
1. That could be any coastal town in southern France, but since I see hills in the background I'd say somewhere in the French Riviera.
2. Can't see the picture.
3. Don't know.
4. Pink bricks! Toulouse.
5. That's the pretty church in Nice.

1. It is on the "French riviera" (its real name is "côte d'azur"). In fact it is the old town of Cannes.
2. Marseille harbour
3. Quite hard, even with the help of patrikke. Perpignan, in French Catalonia.
4. Toulouse, in the south west. very tipical with its red-brick architecture.
benjamin, red birck is not always English or Dutch. A red-briks architeture does exist in southern Europe, but look very different. You find of it in the Po plain in Italy (venezia has a lot of it).
5. BINGO !! Old town of Nice.

The only Mormon temples I've found that resemble the one in Julian's mystery city are in Lima, Guatemala City and Buenos Aires. I could't find any good pictures of Lima to compare to the rest of the Julian's pictures. There were some nice ones of the skyline of Guatemala City, but that city looks too small. I'm inclined to say it's Buenos Aires because of the size of the skyscraper area, but I wasn't aware of mountainous (or very hilly) areas near the city. Also, I didn't see palm trees in the picture I found of the LDS temple in BA.
But I'm going to guess Buenos Aires anyway.

Elain, your picture is very difficult to guess. It is in the central place of the city, maybe the most famous, but it is where are standing two very parisian-style 19th century buidings, which are quite unusual to find in the south of France. Actually the rest of the city is different.
It is a very young city and a lot of it is quite new, excepted the narrow old center, with very narrow streets and little marketplaces. Some of the other photos you showed are a new quartier made by a famous (but quite bad) Catalan arquitect in the 80's, with a very megalomaniac urban composition.
