I broke my tailbone!!!!!

Yep, I broke it. I was at a bowling alley, and I was goofing around. Rather than actually throwing the ball, I acted like I was crapping it out, and just dropped it onto the lane from between my legs. The ball then rolled a few feet down the lane, but not nearly close enough to reach the pins and subsequently return to me. So then I proceeded to attempt to retrieve it myself by walking down the lane and picking it up. Now I'm no experienced bowler, and I had no clue you were not supposed to walk on the lane, as it is extremely slippery. Not only did I walk, but I skipped and danced in a running fashion down the lane, and promptly slipped, flung my arms in the air, went vertical, and came crashing down on my tailbone. I have been walking around, performing daily activities for over a week now, just trying to tough it out. To my suprise, after receiving x-rays this morning, I have a broken bone. My entire back is in spasm as a result besides the acute pain at the region of impact. I'm such a pimp! Unfortunately, I will be inactive for at least 6 weeks, thus frustrating some major plans I had for myself in the coming months. What really concerns me is my disease. I have Chronic Pain Syndrome, where the brain-to-nerve function is abnormal. Sometimes with this disease, the pain from an injury never goes away, even after the site of the injury has been completely healed. So, it's safe to say I'm a little stressed out about that.

Wow, I really feel for you! But try not to worry about the possibility of your CPS before you need to. My recommendation is to see a sports doctor, if you haven't already -- as a group, they know so much more about how to deal with physically active patients than regular doctors do.

(I've never gone bowling, and now I think I never will!)

My mom broke her tailbone (walking down stairs!) when I was a child. I remember she couldn't bend over for a while. But she healed up and has had no problems since. It's a pretty minor thing to break, in the long run. I wouldn't get too worked up over it.

I still have my first rib out of place from pulling someone very heavy months ago (haven't gone to the chiropractor to get it popped back into place yet), and it also causes muscle spasms in my neck and shoulder, along with tingling in my arms (I guess when the muscles spasm, they pinch the nerves). Nothing seemed to help much except megadoses of ibuprofen, and I'd really like to keep my liver, thanks. I started taking fish oil capsules on the suggestion of my ex, whose father was prescribed them for his knee pain. Fish oil actually has some sort of antiinflammatory properties, and I haven't had more than the occasional soreness (like a crick in the neck) since. You might want to ask your doctor about those. At the worst he might shrug and say, "Well, it can't hurt."

Porthos,

i hope that it will get better soon and not hurt you.

Ouch...if anyone skipped and danced down a bowling alley in England, anyone watching them would have a fit. Most people are too scared to even step on it. The most common injury bestowed to an English bowler is to fling the bowling ball the opposite direction from the alley itself - which has happened several times for people that I know, but fortunately only once for myself.
Hope it gets better soon.

Thank you Pauline.

But Uriel, with the Ibruprofen, it's not really your liver you should be worried about, but your stomach. Over the counter pain relievers like Tylenol (acetimenophen) are damaging to your liver, and reduce the production of glutathione in your body. NSAIDS like ibrufrofen or naproxed sodium (aleve) are hard on your stomach and can lead to things like ulcers. I too was once on mega doses of Motrin, and the result was a series of ulcers which left me puking on a daily basis and in a lot of pain. So be careful about that. You might want to consider physical therapy and some form of a muscle relaxant for your spasms, which are themselves, just your body's reaction to a displacement of a bone. No doubt you are probably suffering from some inflammation at the site of your injury, so anti-inflammatory medications might be good for you, although you must be careful with the doses because of your stomach, and make sure you only take them on a full stomach. If you don't, it will come back to bite you in the ass.

I feel like Cartman from Southpark. "Ow, my ass!".

I told my friends that I broke my butt. lol

Well that'll be no hankey-pankey for you for a little while...

So what plans do/did you have for the next few months?
Porthos

Camping, sea fishing, offroading, dancing, etc.... All of which I cannot not do now.

What an excellent opportunity to start learning a new language!
Porthos

How? I would like to improve my Spanish first. I speak it an advanced-intermediate level and enough to speak with average people, but not enough for an intellectual conversation like I would like. But I've never had an actual instruction in Spanish, as in a class. And I can't take any at school this year either.
Loic

Something tells me that your fluency in Spanish is akin to mine in a few Chinese dialects. Do you lack the vocabulary or the confidence level?

If that is the case, do you consider yourself to be bilingual?

You could always consider learning Esperanto... six weeks would be enough time to reach a high standard. Simply register on http://www.lernu.net and learn the grammar and the basic phrases and vocabulary, and then start learning the words from the Baza Radikaro Oficiala here:

That depends. On the street, I'm able to converse with people, buy food, sell things, have conversations, etc. But I am not capable of having an intellectual conversation such as the one we are having. Most people would consider me bi-lingual, but I would say that I'm not completely. I speak Spanish at about a 60% level, but again, I have never recieved a proper education in it, so my grammar might be a little off at times, along with other complications. I've just learned by being exposed to it since early childhood, and by picking up words over the years from my family members, especially the older ones who don't speak that much English. I would say I understand Spanish, basically at a fluent level. I can even understand most of a Portuguese written text. But I'm not as confident at it when it comes to speaking, since I often forget words, or use impromper grammar and such. My pronounciation is perfect, since I've been properly pronouncing it since the age of three. But I do have to take classes in order to perfect my spoken language skills. In the meantime, being that I can't take any classes, can anyone recommend some self-teaching tools that I could employ to further my fluency level?

have a quick recover !
Porthos

recovery. Thanks!
Joanne

Oh, no Back spasms are awful, I know. I chipped a bit off my tailbone myself when I was about your age, too. I was playing baseball, and running to second, I mis-stepped and slid with my hip at a weird angle. I still get back spasms occassionally.

I hope you feel better soon. Have fun with the painkillers, Porthos, and don't forget to eat before you take them!
Uriel

Ibuprofen is hard on your stomach, but it can also be toxic to your liver in high doses, because that is the organ that metabolizes it.
Fredrik

LOL (no offence, as you Porthos like to say when being Batavophobic), but I didn`t know that it`s actually possible to break the tailbone. In Norway "breaking the tailbone" is an euphemism for falling heavily on your ass.

Have you recovered?
Uriel

(Giggle) I like your proverb, Fredrik! Where'd you dig that one up?
Fredrik

Thanks. You know, just type friesische Sprichwörter = Frisian proverbs into Google and all kinds of nasty shit turns up!

Seriously, I love to prove that the Alde Friezen could be a little raunchy. You don't get too much erotic output from the Fryske Waterkant. The closest thing has to be the famous German author Siegfried Lenz's loving descriptions of young Frisians in Nordfriesland, in for example Deutschstunde = German Lesson, which is a really great art/war/adolescence novel you all should read, in addition to Lenz's very German Das Vorbild = An Exemplary Life

And if you like lighter stuff: The Frisian ghost story par excellence: Thedor Storm's chilling Der Schimmelreiter = The White Horse Rider / The Dykemaster, a Frisian ghost story centred around the young, inventive (and sexy, as Frisians go) dykemaster Hauke Haien and his fight against the North Sea and his neighbours' old, Frisian superstitions. I assure you, after having read this book, the Frisian Hound of the Baskervilles, you'll not look upon the Fryske Waadsee with the same unsuspecting eyes ...
Uriel

You know, I really have so few preconceptions about Frisians ... or even conceptions at all....

But if they have to get their wives drunk to get a little action, I can see why they aren't famed as the Red Hot Lovers of the North!
