Just checking in...

Hi, I haven't been around for a while. What's new with everyone? (Anyone want to come back to Antimoon? The more real posters there are, the fewer trolls there'll be.)
Liz

Hi Josh! Good to 'see' you again!

I'm here, too, apparently...I'm just telling André (who has really vicious ways of nagging forum members - now I'm starting to fear you, André ) that currently I'm not being lazy at all...quite the contrary. If I was lazy, I would certainly participate in these wonderfully intriguing discussions, just to maintain the facade of 'not laziness' (unlaziness? dislaziness? antilaziness? or whatever). Unfortunately, I do have a good reason to not post here or anywhere else at the moment...or more precisely, several good reasons...called exams. I hate them more than anything, believe me...I'd rather post here.

Oh, nothing to fear, I'm sweet as pie, and totally harmless!!

However, I do know people who know people....
Uriel

Hey, Josh!  Took a little hiatus myself, but Antimoon is next on my list to visit.  See you there.

Um... uh... hmm... I'll have to give it some thought.
Didier69

I didn't know Antimoon. But I'm so curious that I checked which kind of site it is. It sounds to me like propaganda what they write there.

Who moderates the "International" languages section?  There's a lot of rude and inane posts that have been there for months and nobody seems to give a darn about removing them.  What gives?

I moderate both, and supposedly Brennus and mjd do as well. The trolls lulled me into a false sense of security by staying away for a couple weeks, but they've come back and I still haven't cleared out the whole backlog.

I commend you for your moderating work, but why is that when I see your name, I picture a little dutch boy with his finger in the dike?

Josh Lalonde

lol, it feels like that sometimes.

Est-ce que Brennus s'est désintégré ? Ou téléporté vers une autre planète ?

I've had the same sentiment, but a different song in mind:

Dun ... dun ... dun ... dun ... Another one bites the dust!

Have you been posting on any other sites?

An actual living, breathing, human being! Whew!

Every once in awhile I do, but they're usually not language sites. I periodically check what's happening at Antimoon, but since I'm neither a linguist, grammarian, student or teacher of languages, I feel that I don't have much to contribute to that site.  I checked out Unilang, but the sheer expansive of that site intimidates me!  I did notice that our long lost friend Kirk has reappeared there. Good to know he's okay.

Sorry about my long absence, the last month or so has been hectic!

Anyway, I'm moving again! Having established our new office in Kuruman, I'm now moving to Upington to establish a new office for the newspaper there.
I'm rather excited, it's a pretty town, and larger than Kuruman.

The town is some 150km from the Namibian border, and about the same distance to one of our major tourism attractions, the Augrabies Waterfalls (the sixth largest in the world).

Uriel

That IS a pretty little town!  And some impressive falls, there.

And (sniff!) don't leave us like that again!

I post on one other site besides Antimonn, called Perspectives.  Tons of people there, half of them completely rabid, as much of it is political.  It took me a long time to get into it, after being used to such a different atmosphere here!
André in Zuid-Afrika

It's also one of the hottest areas in the country, but I'll just have to brace myself for that... But it's beautiful, situated right on the banks of the Orange River. So while the area is actually part of the Kalahari, it's very green and in fact known as the Green Kalahari. I will get to know a region where I've only been a few times. The area certainly is more beautiful than where I am now. It's a raisin and wine producing region. Also, Namaqualand, known for its flowers, is close by.

How wonderful for you! I hope you have a great time in such a pretty town. When you get there, would you be a dear and send me a crate of Oranjerivier wines?  My supply is running a little low.

André in Zuid-Afrika

Hehe, will do so! Oranjeriver wine is actually delicious, and relatively cheap. And in Upington one can buy directly from the cellars...

I'm leaving for Upington on Saturday. The first month I will be staying in a guest house, paid for by the newspaper, while I do house hunting.

This is the guesthouse.

Back garden (note the river...)

Sympa l'endroit !

Well, I've settled down in my new town, moving into my new house this weekend, have arranged my office, and will now once again have time to play!   So let's get this going again!

I wish you good luck, Andre, but I'm afraid this another  (which one?) trial of resuscitation will not be more succesful than the previous one(s). I lost my hope. You cannot resuscitate the dead.

Afraid you might be right. Is this finally the end?

It's only the end if you let it end.

What sites are all of you visiting these days?  I can't imagine that all are past members have suddenly stopped spending time online.  They must've gone somewhere.

Well, I have been spending last months mostly on Polish forums concerning various subjects. Once ot twice I visited Antimoon. Almost every day though I log in to the Langcafe but on many occasions I see no new posts so automatically  log out.
What about you?

This has been pretty much it for me. And it's been awfully lonely...
Loic

Well, I have not been visiting other forums. In this respect, I have been largely loyal to Langcafe. However, this has been a very busy year for me and now that my exams are over for the time being, I am allowed a breather so here I am!

Where have you moved to, Andre?
Loic

Actually, is Deborah still here? I am very glad that I see Elaine, Andre, Khsa and Uriel, but it'd be perfect if she's here as well.

Great to see you back, Loic! I've moved to the town of Upington to launch a new office for the paper here.

Hi Loic! Nice to see you here again!  Sadly, Deborah has left us. I wish she would reconsider and come back. I miss her terribly.
Loic

Andre: Oh! Where is it? Does it mean that you are imbued with more managerial responsibility now, which is to say that you are now more of a manager than a reporter?

Elaine: It's such a shame that she left. I think it would be quite hard to coax her out of retirement. Experience has told me that quitting a beloved forum like Langcafe, rather much like adultery, is very much habit-forming: at first it feels impossible, then transgressive and finally mundane.

It's close to the Namibian border. It's actually a one man's office (in the sense that I'm the only reporter here), but the town is fairly large (not a city yet, though) and I cover a large area, with towns to either side up to 300km away. I hate playing a manager, which is why I opted for fulltime reporting again two years ago. This is a new office (the office used to exist only for the purpose of getting ads and subscribers), so it's a challenge to get it up and running as a news office (the same thing I did in Kuruman).
Liz

I've been away recently and it takes time for me to catch up with the latest post. I've been busy, as per usual (not much of an excuse, I know ) and I've had no time to read anything here. I still can't guarantee that I'll make much contribution to the discussions - I'm just checking in to let you know I'm still alive before sinking into complete oblivion.

Merry Christmas (better late than never) and a happy new year to everyone!
