MarchI was gonna put this in the music thread, but that thread was so damn slow so I'll make a new thread...Here is a little piece performed by the Swedish Army Drum Corps (06/07). I think it's very impressive. Just look at those robot-like movements they make! The precision! Mein Gott! Having played in a marching band I sometimes like to listen to a march or two, even though I never liked playing most of them very much. I only listen to marches through my earphones, though, 'cause I don't want my neighbors to get the wrong idea. This is not something I do every day, but occasionally. |

Here's a very different example of precision:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=fijTqLEWBI8 This is a very famous and oft-performed scene from a very famous 19th-century ballet, La Bayadère. I either get very bored by it or go into a pleasant trance. Or I start trying to figure out what brand of pointe shoes each dancer is wearing. You have to get 5 minutes into before the repeated phrase stops. I think the Paris Opera Ballet (shown) performs this better than any other ballet company. |

That is precision, Deborah! I reckon it must've taken a few rehearsals for all those moves to stick...  Seriously, most people have no idea how much work is involved.
From American TV-series and such you get the impression that every (large) high school in the US has a marching band. Is that so? You see these kids wearing these way-over-the-top-style uniforms... |

I think a high school marching band is pretty much a given. I went to an all-girls private school, though, so we didn't have one, but we did have one at my junior high school. And along with the high school marching band tradition, you have that quirky subculture of band geeks.

They're big in college, too. (I feel a sudden need to watch the movie Drumline again!)
As for the uniforms -- let's just say that watching my old alma mater's band geeks parade in full polyester regalia in ridiculous temperatures makes my butt squirm for them in sympathy! Good thing football season is mostly held in the cooler part of the year, but the early part of the season is still murder on those kids. |
