Hey, I scored 100% in English!
I took the French and Spanish tests. I don't remember the percentages, but I was classified as advanced intermediate in both. However, in Spanish I did better in the grammar tests than in the vocabulary & comprehension tests, whereas in French I got perfect scores in the vocabulary and reading comprehension but made quite a few mistakes in grammar (even the easy part). I suppose that 5-6(?) years' exposure to French, even though it was many, many years ago, left its mark. I'm currently studying Spanish, so I guess the grammar is fresher in my mind.

Here's my dutch results : it's a funny result because my dutch is much better that my german, but in this test it's the inverse.
The Dutch test was much more difficult that all of the others what I've made, also it seemed there was a mistake in their dutch (I thought there was several ! ), but a dutch can let us know if this is the case because I'm not sure.

The Chinese proficiency test is intrinsically flawed. For one, it is a bitch reading the romanised pronunciation. That's not how we evaluate Chinese language skills as the romanised alphabet of Chinese phonetics is only accreditised as a learning aid and is otherwise not really recognised as standard orthography at all.
There are also a few errors in the syntax which the evaluators put forth as being correct.
For my French level:
You are at the Advanced level.
You scored 137 points out of 150.
You scored 91% overall.

You scored 40 points out of 45.

Polish: duration: 7 min
score: 150/150 (100%)
English: duration: 18 min
score: 142/150 (94%)
French: duration: 19 min
score: 117/150 (78%)
Russian: duration: 18 min
score: 115/150 (76%)
Comment: for Polish and English this is what I expected. I'm rather surprised with the scores in French and Russian which seem to be very high. I expected some 60-65% for French and 40-50% for Russian.
Anyway, I decided to take the Dutch test (I never learned Dutch) and by picking the answers randomly I scored 21%.
This is why I think that tests are not a perfect way to assess knowledge, but still think it's a very useful additional tool for measurement of language competence.
|
Deborah
|
KSa, I think the Russian test must be comparatively easy. I got 68% and I only finished the first 2 sections. I only answered 2 questions in the third, and didn't even attempt the last, and still got a score of Intermediate.

I was not surprised that my dutch is advanced, but for German I didn't expected ; I think it's Advanced Intermediate.
Then for Spanish, Intermediate is nice, but probably Advanced Beginner would be the description more accurate, for English also.
The English test was very easy, especially the vocabulary was very simple, for exemple, the word synonymous -this is evident what it does mean ! It isn't a true test of your English vocabulary to ask such words. The Spanish and Dutch tests were very difficult, I found , and the Dutch one did have some errors to make the choice of an answer impossible (I'm as sure as I can be, without hear this from a Dutch native who has as well saw the test .)
But, it's fun & interesting to see what are the results of everyone

Danke !! Im Moment kann ich gut konzentrieren, aber ich glaube schon, dass es nicht mein Schuld ist, wenn ich weniger schaffe.
Wie sind deine andere zwei Testen gegangen ? Schade, dass das Niveau zu underschiedlich zwischen der Testen ist, weil darum kann man nicht so gut vergleichen. Es ist aber natürlich nur ein bisschen Spass.
Sorry, that this was in German.

Tiorthan
|
English: 2 mistakes - One of them I could not distinguish between colloquial and formal use, the other one was ... well, I knew the answer but ...
Irish: I knew 2 answers and got 3 right by chance. - Result of 1 month of Irish.

Pauline
|
Tiorthan,
You've made only 2 mistakes on the english test ?? !!!! Then you speak it like a native speaker. How you leanred so good english ?
But, Irish - you must study more LOL !! Only 2 answers
Maybe, I will try a language what I can't speak at all, to discover how is the result.

I made the swedish test, and my result :

My japanese test result :
You are just starting out.
You scored 41 points out of 150.
You scored 27% overall.
The problem was, that it was in the incorrcet alphabet - if it were in the japanese one, I would have the result : advanced

I'm curious, what did people answer this one as?
5. Mr. Hawkins requests that someone _________ the data
by fax immediately.
A. sent
B. sends
C. send
D. to send
The answer is C: SEND, and officially I guess this is correct. However, this usage would be much more common in American English than British English. I bet many native BE speakers would answer that B: SENDS was correct. I don't think it should really count as an error. It's certainly not an obvious mistakes like the others in the test.

Pauline
|
Aquatar,
I can't remember what answer I've written for this question. The grammar questions I've found difficult on the Englsih test, but the vocabluary were very simple ones.
For this question, for me it would be necessary guess it !!
The dutch test aksed some questions about what verb is correct, but the answers didn't had the correct preposition for the verb what I thought were corrcet. I think that there are some mistakes in the dutch test.

Now, I don't understand why it should be 'send' instead of 'sends'. What is the rationale behind it?
|
Benjamin [inactive]
|
It's the subjunctive, used to express hopes and desires. Here's a better example:
We insist that Martha tells the truth — we claim or emphatically assert that Martha is telling or does indeed tell the truth.
We insist that Martha tell the truth — we demand Martha to tell the truth.
|
Deborah
|
I've read that the subjunctive is not used much in British English, loic, which might explain why it sounds strange to you. But Benjamin didn't say that it sounds odd. How about it, Benjamin?
|
Benjamin [inactive]
|
I often make an effort to use the subjunctive in writing, but it might sound a bit pompous in speaking.
|
Pauline
|
I thought, that in the germanic languages, the subjunctive is very seldom (or not at all ) used. But, it seems that you can find it sometimes. We have discussed this recently on the german thread, about German, and the conclusion was that it exist, but it get slowly eradicated. I think that in dutch it is disappeared ( or maybe never was in this language -I don't know ).
|
Tiorthan
|
As for German:
- Mr. Hawkins verlangt, dass jemand die Daten sofert per Fax versendet.
- Mr. Hawkins verlangt, dass jemand die Daten sofert per Fax versende.
both of them were considered (by friends/family) as "correct" and the tenor was, the second is more old-fashioned and more demanding.
The same holds true for me in english but I don't know whether this is because my english speaking friends are spread around the world or I am mixing the languages up here.
I could not decide on "send" vs. "sends". On my first attempt on this test I took "send". However when I did the test the second time I picked "sends", which was the first to cross my mind. I'm a bit ambivalent here.
|
Benjamin [inactive]
|
Mr Hawkins requires that someone send the data by fax immediately.
Mr Hawkins requires that someone sends the data by fax immediately.
Both sound right to me, although I'd usually find a way of avoiding that sort of structure by using an infinitive instead:
Mr Hawkins requires someone to send the data by fax immediately.

I don't know what anybody else thinks, but down here, the second sentence structure is very uncommon, with the first sentence structure substituting it on most occasions.
|
Deborah
|
The use of the subjunctive in these examples looks perfectly natural to me, and even sounds normal. But I'm significantly older than the other members here, and I also work in a law firm, where the language that I read all day is more conservative and prescriptively correct than the way most people in the US speak.

In the British patriotic hymn, isn't the subjunctive employed in God Save the Queen?
Come to think of it, that must be the only living example of a subjunctive verb I've encountered in English.
Using Benjamin's explanations, I've arrived at the following conclusion:
God Saves the Queen - We claim or emphatically assert that God is saving or does indeed intend to save her majesty.
God Save the Queen - We demand that God save the queen.
|
Benjamin [inactive]
|
Yes, that's basically right; the subjunctive is also used to express third person imperative.
Another example would be 'God bless you' as opposed to 'God blesses you'.
|
Deborah
|
And, of course, "God damn you."
|
Loic
|
Lol. True, all true. Come to think of it, we always use a subjunctive after God.
