Reality TVOkay, I hate to admit it, but I can't get enough of this season's "Project Runway" and that train-wreck of a show, "Flavor of Love" :!:
Is anybody else here watching either of these shows? Lord almighty, every time I tune into Flavor of Love, I feel like taking a bath. Those girls are skank-eeee!
I'm still upset that Allison was booted off Project Runway 2 wks ago. She seemed like such a sweet gal, and she designed some terrific outfits. One misstep (an atrocious one at that) designing an outfit made of garbage and she gets voted off, yet that novice Angela who can't sketch worth a lick and sprinkles lame rosettes all over her '80s Cyndi Lauper rip-off fashions still manages to cling on for dear life. Unfair!

We don't have those those here. Generally I can't stand reality shows. Survivor South Africa is starting I think next week. I'll probably watch an episode or two, because the presenter is a hunk!
And some of the participants...

Speaking of "Survivor"... this coming season's "Survivor: Cook Islands" will be dividing teams by race, pitting whites, blacks, Latinos, and Asians against each other. Gracious! I'm a little disturbed by the notion yet curious as all heck how this will play out.

Are you joking?! Yeah, that's disturbing. I think contests that pit men against women are also disturbing, but those will probably always be around.

| Quote: | But to what end, asks Jen Chau, co-founder of New Demographic, an anti-racism training company.
"If the producers are splitting the contestants up by race, it's clear they want to show racial tensions, and they want the usual competitive trash-talking to devolve into racial slurs," she says. "I don't buy that they are merely trying to do the right thing by presenting a more diverse cast. Would any thinking person with truly good intentions think that pitting racial groups against one another is a good way to bring diversity?" |
I couldn't agree more.

I used to watch the Swedish Expedition Robinson, the last season I watched was in 2003, I think. Then I watched two seasons of Fame Factory which is or was a show where the winner got to record an album. It was just too hilarious to stop watching it. In my dorm in Uppsala an Australian, a South African and I used to watch The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad and Floor Filler. Floor Filler is a show where you get to follow a group of contesting dancers. That was fun to watch because some of the dancers were pretty good. I watched the four or so last episodes of The Joe Schmo Show. I'll tell you, the end was worth watching! Then I watched a couple of episodes of The Restaurant. I'll never open up a restaurant! I'm not hooked on anything now, thank goodness!

Read about that, can't see anything good coming out of it. It reminded me of an incident on the local version of Strictly come dancing. When a black participant was voted out, she made a remark that "this proves black people should vote for each other". The (black) presenter agreed by saying: "Absolutely." There was an uproar, and both apologised, insisting that they meant nothing racist by it.

The only reality show I watched regularly (for a short period) was Blind Date, because I thought the captions were pretty funny.
Are competition shows (e.g., So You Think You Can Dance) considered reality shows? My roommate and I watch that sometimes, both being ex-dancers. (I'll watch anything that has dance in it, no matter how tasteless I think the dancing and choreography are.)

Yes, competition shows would fall under the "reality show" category (like "Project Runway"). Did you ever watch "Dancing with the Stars"? That was another guilty pleasure, but I didn't start watching it until towards the end.
And while we're on the subject, there's a new dvd coming out with Antonio Banderas as a ballroom dance instructor. Have you seen it? Curious to know if it's any good.

Well, according to wikipedia that dance show you mentioned is "an American dance reality show and competition". Anywas, it can be pretty amazing to watch good dancers to their thing. I watched some competition on TV once and one guy in particular stood out, and I couldn't help but chuckle a bit. I wish I knew what the style he used is called, but the music was kind of techno-ish if I remember correctly, and his moves were like spasms one minute and very controlled the next, like a humanoid going into a frenzy. I feel like a moron here, but I guess his number might've included a mix of styles, like street dance, jazz etc etc. Anyway, one of my female colleagues thinks that the "robot dance" is my thing, from what little she's seen me do. I guess it may not your preference, Deborah, but maybe you know what kind of dance it is I'm babbling about.

Survivor wasn't exactly the most diverse show to begin with :( IMHO, the last interesting season they had was the one in the Pearl Islands.

Elaine,
I'm just curious. If I was on that survivor show, what team would I be on? I'm Latino, but I'm like totally European looking. ?????
My friends and I were discussing this very same subject. My friend Adrian is half-black, half - white. What gang would he join in prison? lol

They'd probably create a team just for you and you alone. I'm only kidding, sweetie.

I have a feeling that Adrian would have no problems figuring that out.

Personally I despise reality TV, although I do occasionly watch 'Flavor of Love.'

I don't see what's so fascinting about shows which deal with everyday, common occurences, though.

I once watched a season of America's Next Top Models. It isn't so bad. It gives us an insight into how models are selected in the industry although I am sure Tyra Banks has exaggerated the process for telegenic effects.
