Text Messaging English

This is a sample of some of my text msgs. Try to decipher what it says. That is, non-native English speakers, try to decipher what it all means. You will find that it makes English look more like German and Dutch also:

"Wuts up? Ya, dat sux. Wer r we goin 2nite? U nd kevin wanna c james bond, rite? Mairsa sed dis wus da best jb movie ever. She luvs dat new dude. ya, he makes me hot 2! Jk. IDK if i wanna c dat 1, or dat new movie w/ will ferrell. wat bout ronnie nd lisha? wil dey b at da dance 2moro? Wel, we can all go 2geder. ur new board is hella kul btw. K, ttyl den. Peace!"

If anybody needs me to translate the above, I can. I have heard Francophones and others complain about how Anglophones obsessively abbreviate all sorts of speech.

Oh, but Francophones do exactly the same thing! I know quite a lot of French people my age in real life, and they often only say the first half of longer words. And if you look at French internet forums or SkyBlog (a kind of French equivalent of MySpace), you'll see that the way they type is often worse than Anglophones on the whole. Oh, and they'll often use an English word when a French word will do as well.
Porthos

Ben, can you understand nearly 100% of my text message? Or did you have difficulties.
Benjamin [inactive]

I can understand the whole of it. Which is pretty amazing, considering that I only send/receive about one text message every two months.

To me "normal" English seems as much looking German or Dutch than the sms-styled English.
I think you say thins because the english words, when writed that way look "foreign" compared to what you are used to. because of that "foreign" look, you have the feeling it is another language, even is you understand it.
to a non-native germanic language speaker the original English spelling would looks "weird" as much as the Dutch or German ones.
Porthos

Fab, why don't you try to translate that in normal English.

I can understand most of it, but some words not.

What's up ? Yes, that (sux?). Where we are going tonight ? You and Kevin wanna sea james bond, right ? (maisa?) said this was best (jb?) movie ever. She loves that new dude. etc...
Porthos

This is the translation, following the original text.

"Wuts up? Ya, dat sux. Wer r we goin 2nite? U nd kevin wanna c james bond, rite? Mairsa sed dis wus da best jb movie ever. She luvs dat new dude. ya, he makes me hot 2! Jk. What's up? Yeah, that sucks. Where are we going tonight? You and Kevin want to see James Bond, right? Mairsa said this was the best James Bond movie ever. She loves that new dude. Yeah, he makes me hot too! Just kidding. I don't know if I want to see that one, or that new movie with Will Ferrell. What about Ronnie and Alisha? Will they be at the dance tomorrow? Well, we can all go together. Your new board is hella cool by the way. Okay, talk to you later then. Peace!

I NEVER use "txt", some times, even as a native English speaker, I have troubnle understanding it. check and see if my transcription of this is correct:

What is up? Yes, that sucks. Where are we going tonight? You and Kevin want to see James Bond, right? Mairsa said this was the best james bond movie ever. She loves that new dude. Yeah, he makes me hot too! Joking. I don't know if I want to see that one, or that new movie with Will Ferrell. What about Ronnie and Lisha? Will they be at the dance tomorrow?

OK, talk to you later then.
Peace!

It's annoying stuff. Most of my friends do it and I always piss them off by sending them texts in proper English. They argue that writing in standard English is overly formal and uncalled for between mates. Or shouldn't it be m8s?

Deborah, do you send texts in SMS language?

PS: Actually, now that I have a Motorola phone, I prefer to ring the other person up. When I had a Nokia, it was so easy to send a text.

Same here. My friends just don't undestand why I don't use it.

I've never sent a text message, period.
Fredrik

Understanding your text message was pretty easy, Porthos!

Although the innovative side of Norwegian text messaging is that people write in dialect instead of literary Norwegian, there is a fair amount of abbreviation going on. My mates and I usually stick to the full version (in dialect, though), as we seldom send messages of such a length that abbreviation is necessary.

Interesting. I suppose you never see the need for it.

Sometimes, I long for the days when we went around carrying pagers. It's really a cool gadget.
Porthos

Loic,
When you send on average, 200 text messages per day, you will understand why it is more beneficial to write in abbreviated form. I want to get the point accross, in a message (not a formal letter) with as few words or letters as possible.
Benjamin [inactive]

200 messages a day must be like one text message every 10 minutes, lol... you must need to contact a lot of people!
Porthos

Yeah, it is quite a bit, I must admit. Hey, that rhymed. I just like to mult-task. You can usually find me in the middle of the three or four text mesage conversations, with each one amounting to 20-30 texts.
