What do you think of when you want to go to sleep?I always imagine myself lying is a huge (Hästens) bed with fluffy pillows and bedsheets in the middle of an artic landscape/frozen polder.
Succes guaranteed.

Nothing works for me except being exhausted.

Works for me as well to think of something really nice... and thinking of something pleasant before you fall asleep, seems to encourage nice dreams as well!
Of course, when it's raining, I have no trouble falling asleep, I love the sound of rain.
My big problem is to actually go to bed. I'm at my most active late at night. But then I also hate getting out of bed in the morning...

Rain is somewhat helpful for me, too.

Sander, you have a very fertile imagination. I cannot possibly think of anything as elaborate as that.
What I usually do is to read something very boring e.g. the Bible or a textbook of differential equations. Slowly but surely, my eyelids become heavier and sailing off into slumberland becomes a piece of cake.

Well, I do everything you shouldn't do at bedtime. I do pull-ups.

And how many can you do?

I usually just breath in and out slowly and evenly. I'' usually fall aslep within 2 minutes, using this method.

Besides doing pull-ups, I drink coffee at nightime. But, I don't think coffee has any stimulating effects on me.
Loic,
It depends. What type of pull-up? The ones with outstretched arms, or the ones with your arms closer in?

Me too. A boring book will do, though. Unless I have company...

Joanne, I'm trying to find that Dave Chappelle skit online where he plays a stereotypical, middle class, surburban, middle aged white guy. He goes into the kitchen, and gets a box of wine, and says, "Ahh, a box of wine puts me right out". I've been doing a video search but I can't find it.

Are you sure it's not the skit where he eats Ribs as a sleeping aid? After that segment, he jokes around with the audience, and I think that's where the "box of wine" joke comes in.
When I get home tonight, I'll pull out my Dave Chappelle DVDs and have a look.

Same here! Until I'm exhausted I never want to go to bed.
If I don't fall asleep immediately I start listening to music, but it keeps me awake even longer

I don't think I really think of anything, except what I need to do the next day. I usually just drink a glass of brandy and then I'm out.

A glass or two of wine, and then a glass of brandy? Elaine, you lush!

It takes me forever to get to sleep. Nothing works -- not even Benadryl, which used to knock me right out. Then once I get to sleep, I can count on waking up after 4 hours -- one sleep cycle, in other words. Then I'm in and out of sleep for the next few hours -- often I'll spend 10 or even 12 hours in bed, just trying to get my 8 hours of sleep! And then it's all I can do to drag myself out.... it sucks.

Yep, that's my situation. The only time in my life since adolescence that I consistently got enough sleep was when I had a job that let me work whenever I wanted, which also meant I got to sleep whenever I wanted. I tended to sleep for 4 hours, then get the rest of my 8 hours quite a bit later in the day. However, if I have to get all my sleep at one go, my best bet is to go to bed around 4-5 in the morning and get up at noon or 1 in the afternoon. I at least feel like going to bed at 4 a.m. And if it's a rainy morning, I have pretty good luck in getting back to sleep.

That sounds like me. The only time in my life since adolescence that I was able to get all the sleep I needed was when I had a job that let me work when I wanted. That meant I could also sleep when I wanted, so I'd sleep for 4 hours, get up and go about my business for another few hours, then sleep another 4 hours. However, if I have to attempt to get all the sleep I need at one go, my best chance is to go to bed around 4 or 5 a.m. and get up at noon or 1 p.m. And if it's a rainy morning, that increases my chances of succeeding. There's something so tempting about going to sleep on a rainy day, especially if you have some animals to keep you company.

I have the same problem, and it does suck when I have to be up early the next day.
