Work RantsHow do you tell a friend that he's a good friend, but blows like an acne-ridden 13-year-old with retainers as an instructor? Next Tuesday, people in my department and I have to take a class to familiarize ourselves with new software the company is switching to, and he's teaching the class.  AARGH!! He's too overqualified for the job, so he teaches too quickly and doesn't effectively get his ideas across, frustrating his students and himself. AARGHH!!!  Bloody hell, I need to do more research this weekend (dammit, and it's a holiday weekend, too!  ) Maybe I can teach myself this crap before he does, and I inadvertently do something catastrophic, like take down the LSE because he threw a hissy fit before telling us what kind of memory cards to use...

Well, I've been extremely busy at work the past few days b/c my lovely company laid off a whole bunch of old-timers and replaced them with young part-timers and temps who don't seem to have a clue how to multi-task and manage their time. So I am forced to do things myself to get the job done on time. Damn whippersnappers! And then, they have the nerve to take long lunch breaks and ask if they can leave work early!! What's wrong with these people??

And one of the most important things to teach them is that after they've put in a lot of years at the office, the office will stab them in the back by laying them off.

That's how it is in the corporate world, though, isn't it? Companies let people go all the time.

In my parents' day, you used to be able, pretty much, to rely on your employer to keep you on if you proved to be a good and loyal worker. But it's no longer the case. The longer you stay, the higher your salary, so you're no longer a desirable employee.

There are few positive things I can say about the previous political system in my country, but in the case of employees with long work experience it was just the opposite - people felt valued in most cases.
The system acted against human dignity in other aspects of life though...

Yes, I'm a bit conflicted about this. My conscience is telling me to train these people to be good, diligent, and upstanding workers, but my darkside says "Screw it! They're just gonna fire us once we become financial liabilities."

The cost management accountant would probably be able to eloquently -but unconvincingly- explain why the company has to cut down on direct labour costs.
I suppose working in the civil service, on the other hand, shelters an employee from the vagaries of the employment market. The private sector is renowned for being a cut-throat world and I think that everyone working in the sector is aware of the associated risks.

No, they've got it sorted, love. That's how you gotta be these days. Take it easy I say coz nobody'll thank you if you work your arse off so you might as well do the basic minimum.
