Wow! Pretty impressive pictures! I've only been to England once when I was a kid, it'd be nice to go there again some time.

Warwick!! :) What brought you there?

I read about the castle before I went to England, and was also told about it by friends who had been there. I arrived in Warwick around five in the afternoon, and the plan was to go and see the castle the next morning, and leave the town afterwards. The castle only opened at ten, so with time to kill, I walked around in the town, fell in love with it, and stayed another day! :) I loved the castle as well, it was well worth the effort to visit it.

Here are some pictures of a small town called Weinheim I visited in Southern Germany, near to Heidelberg. It was very, um... gemütlich.

I went to a game reserve just outside of town on Saturday. Here are some of the pics I took.

Beautiful pictures of the native flora and fauna.

Are all of them taken in your neighbourhood, Andre?

Yes, the first set was taken in a game reserve just out of town. The first bird picture was taken in the garden of the guest house where I'm staying until I move into my new place on Saturday, and the other three was taken in a local garden centre.
Elaine

Nice pix, André. Is there a guest bedroom at your new place?

That's so cute! The little one looks just like me when I was young.

They were beautiful!! And I'm sure you were just as elegant (and still is).

It was amazing, they stared at me as if they were wondering what I was doing... so peacefully.

I spent an absolutely fantabulous weekend in Newport Beach and despite the disparaging remarks I've made in the past about the O.C., I must say their beach communities are wonderful!

I stayed at my AMW friend's house that she shares with her fabulously wealthy beau (lucky girl!), and we rode his motorboat around the harbor, circling Balboa Island.

Note: Even though the thread is titled "Your Pictures", these aren't really my pictures since I can't figure out how to retrieve my photos from my phone and send them to my photo album.

About that second picture...was it taken in winter, or are people in Newport Beach just extravagant with their irrigation? (Pretty, though, whatever the reason!)

How far off the mainland is Balboa Island?

That whole region, down to Laguna Beach is a very affluent area so it's green like that all year round.

It's a very long and exhausting trip. I don't know how you managed, Elaine.

Oh...I should have noticed the lack of surf. So how do you get there -- wade?

It's a very nice boat ride nonetheless.
Deborah

I saw a TV movie (I think that's what it was) once where most of the action takes place on Balboa Island. They showed the people waiting for a ferry to take them over, but there was no indication of how far away it was. And since were scenes on a beach with a surf, I assume they shot it on the part that's just called "Balboa". And if it really was Balboa in that movie, I have to say, it's beautiful.
Elaine

Do you remember the title of the movie? I wonder if I've seen it. Anyway, there's Balboa (or Balboa Peninsula) where the Ferris wheel and kiddie rides and outdoor activities are, and then there's Balboa Island with ritzy beach homes and swank shops. I think you have to be made of money to live on the Island.

I don't remember the title. The first picture looks familiar; they must have used that scene in the movie.

Thought it's time for some pictures again. Below are some pictures I took of The Eye - a natural fountain in the town of Kuruman, and apparently the second largest in the world. It supplies the town with water.

Lovely pictures! Is a fountain the same as a spring? Some years ago, I visited a friend in Florida who took me to the Silver Springs Park. Silver Springs is one of the largest spring "complexes", with water reaching 80 feet in depth. It's been used for lots of underwater scenes in movies. They have tours in glass-bottomed boats -- it's incredible how clear spring water is.

Yep, fountain = spring. We use spring as well, but in Afrikaans both spring and fountain translates as fontein, and I would say fountain is used more often than spring in SA English.

And Namaqualand (another trip)

Elaine

Beautiful pictures, André.  I love those wildflowers growing on the desert floor.  Is that the Richtersveld?

No, that's Namaqualand (although you're close, the Richtersveld is next door). Those flowers are daisies, the ones Deborah have in her garden.

Oh. I thought the Richtersveld was in Namaqualand. I guess I thought wrong.
Uriel

Gorgeous photos, Andre!!

We have oryx (gemsbok) where I live, too -- they were imported for big game hunting and live wild in the scrub on White Sands Missile Range, just up the road and over the mountains from where I live --

André in Zuid-Afrika

They are beautiful animals!

Elaine, technically the Richtersveld is part of the greater Namaqualand, but its the area closer to the coast next to the Namibian border. We generally think of them as two seperate regions.
Uriel

What kind of trees are those?
André in Zuid-Afrika

The ones on the flower pics? They're quiver trees. It's a kind of aloe. They're found in Namaqualand and Bushmanland.
Uriel

Gosh, you are truly blessed with such a fabulous diversity of flowers and animals, and such an overabundance of beauty, Andre!

The wonderful thing about this country is that the various regions are so different from each other. You have it in the USA too, but here it is over a much smaller distance. You drive 150 km, and you're in a completely different enviroment.
Uriel

Really?  What kinds of different environments would I see on a cross-country car trip?
