It looks as if it could be in California (in winter, since it's fairly green), except that there's something wrong with the concentration of high-rises in relation to the hills, i.e., there should be more suburban-looking areas between the high-rises and the hills.

How are you so familiar with what looks South American? I have no concept, unless it's the photogenic famous parts of Rio.

I don't really know. It just has a certain look not unlike the one Fab posted of Santiago, Chile. Maybe it's the sunlight or the landscape or the architecture... Hmmm... Or maybe it's just women's intuition!

Elaine,

Right, it is in south America. I think it is a bit hard to guess which city, so I'll give another clue :

For your's I'd say Vancouver. Even if it seems it could be in a lot of Anglophone countries. I think I recognised it.[/img]

You haven't answered yay or nay, Elaine, but I also think it's Vancouver. The "Dominion Hotel" seems to indicate Canada, and I think I remember those multi-globed lamps from Gastown, the historic district.

But what exactly is an "Anglophone" look? I live in an English speaking country, and the general ambiance, landscape, and architecture looks nothing like England.

Northeastern U.S., Canada, and Australia and New Zealand's architectural style might look uniformly "Anglo", but in large parts of the U.S., it looks or feels nothing like the British fashion.

Should we wait for Elaine to answer or can I take a stab at it?

While we wait, here's another mystery city:

Jolies photos. The first one made me think of Marseille. The third one looks a bit like la Major :

I have an idea. But I'm not too sure. Julian : is your mystery city on the Mediterranean ?

On doit penser à la même ville fab...

Mais j'sais pas pourquoi, j'avais pensé à Valparaiso au Chili — mais ça n'est pas ça Julian, hein ?

Ci-dessous : Valparaiso.

Nobody's guessing ? The answer is Genova, Italy !

the port has been tranformed by the famous Italian arquitect Renzo Piano for the 500th of the dicovery of the Americas.

a city famous for holding one of the biggest "old center" of Europe

and close to the "Cinque Terre" region and the charming town of Portofino

Another guess (not so easy) :

I'm sorry, fab. I didn't bother answering because I knew the answer right off from your clue, and I didn't want to spoil the fun for anyone who didn't know the answer. (Maybe that's what happened to everyone.) But your most recent entries will be more challenging.

Yes, my mystery city was/is Vancouver (props to Fab, Deborah, and Julian!). Fab, your previous city is Caracas. Your new mystery city I'm guessing by the fan palms is somewhere in northern African coast (but it could just as easily be in California). And I could've gotten Genoa.

I can't see the picture for the second hint.

Herculaneum?
