None of them. They all sucked for women. I'm with you, Pauline -- I'd rather live in the future.

Dear, oh, dear... well, when I go back and visit you all who want to live in times long passed, no hugs and kisses will be necessary.

I'd like to live in Warsaw or Cracow between 1870-1939.

It would be nice to die on 31 of August 1939.

I guess if you were a) male, b) a member of the aristocracy or educated class, and/or c) a talented artist lucky enough to land a rich patron, then yeah, I guess those periods would be alright. But as a lowly female among the unwashed masses...

I think I would've loved to have been a writer/creative force living in Montparnasse during the Années Folles, and serving as muse to Picasso, Dalí, Duchamp, Fargue, Prévert, Miller, Brassaï, Man Ray, etc. And in return for my magnanimity they'd immortalize me on canvas, photo, film, and the written page.

Either that or exchanging bon mots and withering ripostes with Dorothy Parker at the Algonquin.

The latter actually sounds like fun...except for the cigarette smoke.

You know, even during the Soviet era, we used to call the citizens of the Soviet Union just "Russians" although we knew very well that Soviet Union consisted of dozens of different nations.

Same here in South Africa. Somehow, "the Soviets" was always used only in a negative sense...
