Congratulations!!! Wow, giraffes! But your house is only 1 story high -- the giraffes will have strain their necks to look into your windows. I suppose the springboks will have an easier time jumping over it, though. The only problem is, you'll probaby be so happy there, you won't want to leave to visit San Francisco.

Thanks! Well, I don't know if I actually want animals peeking into my windows!
After buying this house, I don't even know if I'll ever be able to afford to leave it, whether I want to or not... _________________ Toe ek jonk was, het ek al die antwoorde geken. Nou verstaan ek nie eens die vrae nie.

I just felt a tiny earthquake, but it hasn't appeared yet on the USGS website.
Update: It was tiny indeed, a mere 2.5, which places it in the "micro" division. The epicenter was 3 km west of the San Francisco Zoo, which is near the west coast of SF.
It felt almost like a very strong gust of wind (the house shook, the windows rattled), but there was that je ne sais quoi that only earthquakes have.

We had another little earthquake about half an hour ago, this time a 3.7 centered in the vicinity of Berkeley. I was -- and still am -- at work, and these newer high-rises are built to shake a lot (and therefore not break), so it felt stronger than it was.

Click here to see the US Geological Survey's earthquake website. If you get there before 12 minutes and 28 seconds after the current hour (8:00 pm PST or 03:00 UTC), you'll see the last earthquake represented by a red square, indicating that it happened within the last hour.
Here's a diagram of the earthquake faults in the SF Bay Area.
The recent earthquake was apparently caused by the Hayward fault, and the one referred to 2 posts above by the San Andreas fault (the one that's just west of San Francisco).

So that's two noticeable earthquakes in 4 days...
How do you think people there react in such cases, Deborah ? Are they blasé or on their guards ?

When I was a kid, I was, if not blasé, at least not bothered at all by earthquakes. I can't say I was blasé because I thought they were fun, so I got sort of excited. But ever since the 1989 earthquake, I've been on my guard. The reaction of the people in the office was to stop, wait to see whether it was going to continue, then breathe a sigh of relief when it didn't, and continue with their work. Sometimes these minor earthquakes prompt people to start talking about other bigger earthquakes they've experienced.

We had another earthquake a few minutes ago, a 3.7 again, but this one felt stronger to me. It actually unnerved me a bit. I don't like this -- it reminds me of the pre-shocks before the 1989 earthquake. (Well, not really -- those were bigger, 5.something.)

I found out recently that I've qualified for discount movie tickets for more than a year! Seems once you turn 55, you get the senior discount. I always assumed you had to be 60 or 65. So that's nice, I can save $3 or so every time I go to the movies. Now I'll have to see whether that applies to other forms of entertainment.

Funny, that didn't happen to me. It did, however, make me forgive my erstwhile boyfriend his transgressions and consent to letting him move in with me...big mistake! Stupid earthquake.

We had another earthquake last night -- a 4.2. They're getting bigger -- uh-oh! The epicenter (the red star) was in Lafayette, which is right on the BART line (that's the Bay Area Rapid Transit). I was in my Spanish class when it happened, and I was proud of myself, since I was able to remember the word "terremoto" when it started.

After my class, I had to wait an unprecedented 25 minutes for a BART train. Finally there was an announcement that it was because of the safety procedures they have to do following an earthquake. I had completely forgotten about the earthquake by that time.

That picture didn't come out very large. It's map of how the intensity of the earthquake was perceived by people who filled in the form at the USGS website. By the form's criteria for categorizing the strength, people's reactions usually tend to be categorized as something higher than the actual intensity of the earthquake. For example, this was only a 4.2, but around the epicenter, people's reactions put it into category V.

I'm going to be leaving the forum, though I might drop in occasionally. I need to get to work on other parts of my life, and I've been spending too much time on langcafe. I've been intending to do this for a while, but it's just so darn much fun here...
It's been a real pleasure getting to know such intelligent, educated and lively people. If you wish to contact me by email, please do so -- I'd be very happy to hear from you. I wish you all success in your endeavors, and happy lives!
I understand you want to do other things in your life. I also think I spend too much time here, which prevents me from taking advantage of good moments with other people...
Have a happy life too, Déborah!
Love,
