It's a bit late and I have no intention of reviving a dormant thread, but this sounds interesting.

It would warm the cockles of Andre's heart that South Africa is genuinely on the list of one of those countries which I would dearly love to visit if not for the fact that flying there would be so dear. If I were to take SIA to go to Cape Town, I would definitely be poorer by S$3000 (US$2000). Maybe...one day.....in the near future, I'd like to go there or to these cities in particular: Cape Town, Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg, Elizabeth Town, East London, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, etc. In short, cities whose names often pop up when cricketing teams come to visit.

Zimbabwe also holds interest for me since it is also a Test country. I'd like to go to Harare and Bulawayo. Getting a visa to enter the country would be a bitch though.

The other African countries that interest me would be the Maghreb in general and Algeria, Morroco and Egypt in particular. I would love to enter a souk and mingle with the spivs and speculators in the market and just soak up the atmosphere.

Next on my list would be Lebanon (gorgeous girls) and Israel/Jordan/Syria. In short, the holy land.

Somehow, the appeal of a country heightens when it becomes more difficult to visit it. South America is a very exotic destination for me because there are virtually no direct flights between Singapore and any South American country. Visiting them would entail an obligatory stopover in either San Francisco or LA for me. Iraq and Afghanistan are dangerous and unstable, but that's precisely why I'd like to go. Visiting the more isolated frontier regions of Pakistan would also be an exciting venture.

But nowadays, really, what with the influx of travel programmes and documentaries, there is no real need to trave in order to broaden one's horizons. That can be easily achieved by watching tv. Travelling, like many other things in life, has become a commodity.

True, but it's still better to actually go to a place.
