This is a documentary on the legality of the income tax in the U.S. There is no consitutional basis for the taxation of labor on Americans, and the government cannot provide legal justification for such a tax. In fact, there is no written law states that we have to pay for an income tax.

Aaron Russo is the director/producer, and his accent is a good example of a New York accent.

Anyway, here it is:

I'll have to watch that at home, where I can turn up the volume.

I once read one man's personal account of refusing to pay income tax on these grounds. I didn't keep up with the story as it progressed, though.

And there is no formal vindication either that 60 millions US citizens should live in absolute poverty, deprived as they are of basic health care etc. Between two "evils", my choice is made : tax more to give more.

Or redistribute what's already being taken out -- not that either of those things is likely to happen.

Yes there is, it's called the 16th Amendment. "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration." Mr. Russo didn't provide any evidence to show that this amendment wasn't ratified.

Wrong. Check out the United States Code, Title 26, Subtitle A, Chapter 1, Subchapter A, Part I, Section 1.

The United States wrote:
There is hereby imposed on the taxable income of—
(1) every married individual (as defined in section 7703) who makes a single return jointly with his spouse under section 6013, and
(2) every surviving spouse (as defined in section 2 (a)),
a tax determined in accordance with the following table:

etc.

There is hereby imposed on the taxable income of every head of a household (as defined in section 2 (b)) a tax determined in accordance with the following table:

etc.

There is hereby imposed on the taxable income of every individual (other than a surviving spouse as defined in section 2 (a) or the head of a household as defined in section 2 (b)) who is not a married individual (as defined in section 7703) a tax determined in accordance with the following table:

etc.

(And as always, Wikipedia provides bucketfuls of dubiously edited information on the topic.)

I think the current federal tax system is in need of huge reform, and I'm open to the possibility of replacing the IRS in favor of something like the FairTax, but to say that there's no constitutional or legal foundation for the current tax system is a joke.
