For native English speakers with no exposure or study of Jamaican Creole: How much can you understand? If you have access to mp3 downloads, download some songs by Vybz Kartel and let me know how much you can understand. I'm interested to know if mutual intelligibility between Jamaican Creole and English is low enough to justify calling it a separate language.
I don't think I've ever been exposed to Jamaican Creole. I checked out some Vybz Kartel songs, and I really couldn't understand much. From what I can find on the Internet, it seems that there are significant differences in grammar and vocabulary.
