The late Heath Ledger. Who would have thought we'd be muttering those awful words about this powerhouse Aussie actor at 28?
With the dust from Brad Renfro's death barely settled (the 25-year-old actor died on Jan. 15), the tragic news of Ledger's death shot around the world late Tuesday aftenoon. With it came a deluge of entertaiment "authorities" hitting the airwaves, the lot of them spouting their possible theories about Ledger's death.
Heath was addicted to sleeping pills said some. He was depressed about his breakup with Michelle Williams said others. One longtime showbiz reporter even spewed out the theory that Hollywood and it's many pressures doesn't kill people. It's those deep, longtime issues Ledger bore about his parent's divorce that probably influenced this "situation."
Hmmmm.
Then came the "James Dean" comparisons amidst the incessant conjecture and morbid playback of Ledger's body being taken from his building.
I wonder. Knowing what we do about Ledger (a man who was dedicated to his craft - not the pursuit of fame, who chose tough acting gigs over easy ones, his utter devotion to his young daughter Matilda, how he'd just started seeing someone new, his friends' reports that he was in a good place in his head, etc.) would the comparison to Dean have angered the Ledger?
The reason I ask this is because of one of his many interview clips that have filled the airwaves over the last 16 hours. In it Ledger talked about death, saying that he didn't fear it any more because his daughter was here to go on for him. But then again, he didn't want to die because he wanted to be here for her throughout her life.
Does that sound like a man who wants to hit Hollywood's history books as "the next James Dean?"
Was Ledger's death a suicide? Was playing the Joker in the next "Batman" movie (a role Ledger couldn't shake) partly to blame for his untimely demise? No one will ever really know. For Ledger's family there is only one answer to all this. It was an accident. End of story. The police, as well, treated the crime scene as an accidental death. It's all just conjecture until the results of Ledger's autopsy today are released.
But until science solves the terrible riddle of Heath Ledger's death, maybe young Hollywood will finally get the wake-up call that will stick out of this tragedy? Maybe celebrities - and fans - of all ages will think twice before they ask some eager doctor to fix their "problems" with another prescription?
If Ledger's death makes people everywhere think twice about how precious life is, then maybe that, beyond his baby daughter and this Oscar-nominated actor's fine body work, will give some meaning to a terrible event that should never, ever have happened.

Ain't never gonna happen. Hollywood is littered with sad tales of drug and alcohol-related casualties, suicides, burn-outs, train wrecks, etc., and yet despite all the lessons that we could've and should've learn from them, young Hollywood continues to fall prey to these demons. Why? Because Hollywood is full of "legit" doctors, therapists, handlers, yes-men, and hangers-on who will gladly provide you with all the things in life that you don't need in exchange for a slice of the pie.
